Cats or dogs-- which do you prefer, and why?

View 863 Answers

Number of cats I share my home with: EIGHT (8)

Number of dogs I share my home with: ZERO (0)

Despite all evidence to the contrary, I actually don't really prefer cats over dogs. I like them both equally, I just happen to have a bunch of cats and no dogs because of where I'm living at the moment. If I had the chance, I would own a dog as well. ♥

Generally, I love dogs and cats for different reasons. Cats can pretty much take care of themselves, so they're good if you don't have the time to go out on walks several times a day. Then again, sometimes you have cats like Neko or Dion, who are so completely codependant when it comes to me that they get seriously upset if I go out for more than a couple hours (and God forbid I should spend the night elsewhere or go away on vacation. :P) And then of course there are the times that they eat your ipod charger cords and you want to skin them all.

Dogs generally need more attention and interaction, but they're tons of fun to play with and much more lively pets than cats. Dogs have a higher energy level. I would actually love to have a dog just to have a workout buddy, actually. Haha.

And then on top of cats and dogs, I'm quite fond of other animals for pets as well, in particular rabbits and rats. They're unique and have quite the personality on them, usually. Owning rats is actually much like having teeny tiny dogs, really. And rabbits are spunky. ♥

I also enjoy keeping reptiles and fish (right now I have a turtle, 2 snakes and a fuckton of fish-- including a pair of piranha-- in two different aquariums,) but that's more of a hobby than anything else. They're fun to observe and pretty to look at, but you can't interact with them much. the good thing about pets like these is the lack of mess. Everything is contained and you don't have to sweep up after them all the time. :)

Just Stuff [11 Mar 2012|11:27pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

Not much has been happening the last few days. A lot of spring cleaning, since the weather's been nice, and I've watched quite a few movies. I'm on a horror kick and have been going through the Netflix archives for ones I haven't seen before. I'm also watching a lot of foreign movies, too.

Other than that... well, Aya's at J&K right now since he hasn't eaten in almost 10 months. ~.~;; I took him down this past Wednesday to see if they could get him to eat, but he was so stressed out from the trip down that they just kept him and tried to feed him yesterday instead. But he still didn't eat, so they're going to hang onto him for another week and try again next Saturday. idek what's going to happen if he doesn't eat then, either. =/

Back on Tuesday, I saw C.A. for the first time in almost two years! X3!! She's back from abroad and planning to stay this time. Her long-term bf is moving to Canada with her too; he's supposed to come over in June or July area. ♥ But she stopped by for an hour and a half or so, and it was SO AWESOME to see her again. I missed her immensely while she was gone. But now hopefully we can get together once in a while. In fact, we already made tentative plans for her to come over for an Asian Cooking Night some time soon. :3

Aaaand yesterday by brother came over for dinner. It's nice when he comes over, as we get along really well nowadays. I made sheppard's pie (turkey not beef) and it was all looking good until I bumped the stove and accidentally turned the broiler on. >>;; This caused the pie to cook until it was black on top and set the smoke alarm off. Then when I went to pull it out of the oven, I set one of my oven mitts on fire. .___.;; YEAH. It was One Of Those Days. (When I pulled the black layer off the pie, it was still perfectly good and yummy underneath, at least. lol.)

Other than that, I've been tinkering away at my Writing Blog ([info]vanimadin) and my Food Blog ([info]houseofyum) and obsessing over My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic because... uh... YEAH IDK, THE CUTE IS ADDICTIVE, I GUESS? 8D;;

If your pet had thumbs, what would it do?

Oh God, what WOULDN'T they do? XD;;

I think they would all do different things, but mostly just get into stuff they shouldn't. But I think the universal one would be to take the locks off the cupboards and get into the yummy, yummy foodz that exist inside.

They were doing that exact thing already, which is why I had to get the locks in the first place. :P

An old TV that's taking up space in the sun room; it still works fine, but I had a bigger one donated a couple months back. *shrug* Actually, at some point my Mom and Lee are going to take it for using in their bedroom, I think. It just hasn't happened yet. ^^;

I also need to go through my closet (read as: wardrobe, since this place HAS no closets XD;) and clear out some clothes that don't fit me anymore. This includes a couple of cosplay outfits that I'm hoping to be able to sell.

The Cake Wasn't A Lie [01 Mar 2012|10:42pm]
[ mood | blank ]

...yeh. So it turned out that my sis and her family couldn't make it for dinner today after all. Arthur wasn't feeling well, plus the roads were bad because of the storm yesterday. Thusly, we're postponing everything until some time next week.

But I made that special cake, and it wouldn't last until then, so I went over to Mom's anyway and stayed for dinner (we had chili ♥) and we all had some cake anyway. The cake itself turned out REALLY good, but the avacado icing was much too sweet. Oh well, live and learn, right? I'm going to adjust the recipe a bit and then make another cake in a few days when Sarah, Arthur and Leah do make it over. :)

On a completely unrelated note, I broke my computer mouse last night, so I had to pick up a new one today. I stupidly dropped it on the kitchen floor and it just died. I wouldn't have even had it IN the kitchen, except I have no ink for my printer so I had to bring the laptop in there for the recipes when I was baking.

I really need to just bite the bullet and pay for the cartridge refills. ~_~;;

Stuff, Stuff, Stuff! [29 Feb 2012|11:10pm]
[ mood | tralalala~ ]

Hokay! My first real entry after months of nothing! ...and it's just a recounting of my day, really. I'm very boring lately. :P

...UGH I JUST BROKE MY MOUSE. *FACEPALM*

BUT ANYWAY.

Today was grocery day. Yay! /sarcasm. >>;

Actually, it's not so bad. Mom and I do groceries together each week, so it's kind of fun to go out and spend the time with her.

So because this is the first shopping trip of the month (for March, even though it's still the 29th of February), I had a TON of stuff to get. I easily dropped $250+ dollars on various things, and that was BEFORE coming home and paying all my bills. =.=;;

So foodstuffs for me and then stocking up on food and litter and other various things for the critters. While I was at the (first) pet store, I also picked up a few fish for my community tropical tank. 2 blue dwarf gouramis, a striped angel fish and 6 cherry barbs. (Already in the tank; 1 pleco, 2 cory catfish, 3 angels, 1 orange dwarf gourami, 2 rosy minnows, 2 gold barbs, 3 rosy barbs, 9 neon tetras, 4 red platys, 1 guppy, 1 tiger barb, 1 redtail shark, 2 zebra danios...) It's a huge 75 gallon aquarium, what can I say? I think my next addition might be one or two congo tetras. They are SO pretty. ♥

When I later went down to J&K to buy rats for Aya and Opal, I asked Dave when I should start worrying about how long it's been since Aya ate; ball pythons will routinely go for long periods of time without eating, but it's going on 10 months since Aya last ate. He seems healthy and isn't losing weight. He's even still shedding, which means he must still be growing. But it's been so long now that Dave said it's probably a good idea to bring Aya into the shop, and they'll hand-feed him for me. If it works, they'll show me how to do it. I might have to buy a pair of feeding tongs, but that's a minor thing when compared to the idea of Aya starving to death. =/

Having done a ton of running around with Mom today during shopping, I then did a bunch more after she dropped me off. XD; I went to the Dollarama and picked up some things for Easter baskets, then to Liquidation World, where I bought a Firefly Jar for part of a Christmas gift for the end of this year.

I froze my tail off with all the walking, since it was blustery and snowstorming when I went out. Now I have wind burn on my face and ears. DX

Tonight was the night that registration for AA at Anime North opened. I sent in my application like five seconds after 8pm when registration officially started, so we'll see if I get a spot. I hope I do, I could really use the money...

Oh, and tomorrow I'm going to Mom and Lee's place for dinner. My sister and her hubby are coming over and bringing my new baby niece, and we're all going to have Chinese takeout together. xD;

So I'm making a cake for dessert! But since my sis and brother-in-law have a lot of diet restrictions, it has to be a really specialty-type recipe. I'm making dairy-free, soy-free carrot cake with frosting made from avacados! O.O The cake looks really good, and I'm doing the icing in a few minutes. Then tomorrow we'll see how it turned out~!

...and now I'll leave you with a brony Cross And Arrow duet dub video, just for shits and giggles:

FAILTASTIC ME [27 Feb 2012|10:46pm]

Yeah, so that whole thing a few months back where I said I was going to post in my journal every day again? PFFT.

I FAIL SO HARD OMG.

At least I've still been keeping up with posts in my writing blog and my Esprit Studios blog, though. Just not here.

I do plan to remedy this, though. I'll try (again) to write here, but I think my goal is going to be a more reasonable "at least once a week" rather than every single day. *nod*

On Nio [02 Nov 2011|02:19am]
[ mood | amused ]

My black cat, Nio, has always been an aloof, independent and somewhat standoffish cat. He was always like that, right from the day I brought him and his sister, Vesta, home. Ves, along with every other one of my cats, are the complete opposite; they're friendly, love snuggles and pets and cuddling and demand as much attention and ridiculous baby talking as I can possibly supply them with.

But that was fine. Basically, Nio is a normal cat, like 99% of the rest of the cats in the world. They are supposed to be independent and aloof, right? Evolution has made them that way. Just... no one told the members of my pride, I guess. >>;

Anyway, I just let Nio be and he was happy being that way. I gave him food, treats, provided him with more toys than strictly necessary, and managed to sneak the occasional scritch once in a while. ♥

But then about a week ago when Nio caught the cold that is currently working its' way through the ranks of my cats, he suddenly decided that he really needed to be with me. He didn't want me to cuddle him, but he would hop up next to me and curl up in a ball by my side and just sleep. I guess for comfort, since he wasn't feeling well. Makes sense.

But that first time, when he spent about four hours sleeping next to me, seemed to change something.

Now, Nio-chuu seems to have it in his head that, HEY, cuddling and playing with me is actually kind of nice! =D

So the last few days, even though he's starting to get over the cold and feeling much better, he's been coming to me for pets and playtime and generally acting like the complete opposite of the way he has been ever since I got him. XD;;

I'm not complaining, of course. It's just so different and such a novelty that I guess I'm a bit flabbergasted by it. It's really nice, though. I find myself kind of hoping things keep on like this and he doesn't just go right back to being all standoffish again once he's 100% over his cold.

Fingers crossed, right? Haha. ♥

Hallows, Hallows [31 Oct 2011|10:47pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

Happy Halloween! ...yeah, I just wanted to say that. :D;

I actually dressed up for the first time in about six years, just for the hell of it. All I did tonight was hand out candy to trick-or-treaters, but what the heck, right? I cobbled a demon outfit together at the last minute; my red contacts and long red wig, my custom fit fangs and then around 5pm I wandered downtown and spent a whole $1 on a pair of red horns. Then I just wore a black tank top and a black-and-white skirt with my knee boots.

Also, Aya kept me company for half of the time I handed out candy. ^_^ He's such a calm snake, I took him out of his terrarium and wrapped him around my neck and he just chilled out there and basically didn't move for an hour. When he started to get restless I put him away again.

But having Aya around my neck? Between that and the red contacts, pretty much every kid who came to the door was like O.O at me. XD; One little boy was SO EXCITED about the snake, he asked if it was an anaconda and I honestly wanted to say yes just because he was so thrilled over the idea. Haha.

Anyhoo, so when I went downtown to buy the horns I was in the rest of my costume (sans Aya, though, he wouldn't have done well out and about like that as it's quite cold out nowadays) and I picked up a few things from Liquidation World, then went to the dollar store for the horns, then on the way back I stopped at J&K to get more rats for Aya and Opal.

lol Sandy and Dave were in today (they pretty much always are), and they both loved my hair/eyes/horns. Apparently cherry red really suits me, which is kind of true because I'm so pale. xD; Sandy wanted to know where she could get contacts like that and so that lead to a conversation about conventions while Dave headed off to get my rats. Man, do I love that store and the people there, you have no idea. ♥

While I was there I also got a hammock for Ven. A couple of days ago I was looking at my little rattie in his cage and wondering why in the hell he was in the small rat cage when I actually have two much larger rabbit cages currently available? .__.; So I went and got those cages, zip-tied them together into one really nice, big, lofty cage, and transferred him over.

At first it was just him and his food dish and his plastic hide, but today I picked up some things to add; the hammock, like I said, and also a big climbing rope and a honey-treat bell that hangs from the roof of the cage. Technically, the honey-treat is supposed to be for birds, but there's nothing in it that Ven can't have and I've found in the past that bird toys and treats make really fun additions for rats; and rats are so smart that they need lots of enrichment and things to play with or they go stir crazy.

I'm still thinking about getting him a bell toy as well, since Yuki and 'Nashi LOVED theirs way back when I had them. (They were my first two rats, for those who remember or care at all.) But Ven's cage is in the bedroom and idk... Yuki and 'Nashi used to flail around with that bell so much they kept me awake even when they were all the way in the living room. XD;; So I guess we'll see.

Right now Ven is still feeling very overwhelmed with all the changes, I think. He's climbed around a bit, but spent most of today hiding in his bed going >O.O< while I fixed his cage up and tidied the room. ^^;; He'll settle in nicely over the next couple of days, though. ♥

Am still considering picking up a second rat, too. Some of my rats in the past have preferred to live on their own, but based on the way Ven's personality is, I think he'd be happier to have a companion. Maybe I'll go and pick out another little male next time I'm downtown. (Then I shall name him Terra! 8D; /KH geek.)

Anyway, so that was my day.

OH. Except that I picked up antibiotics for the cats today as well. They won't cure the colds everyone's got, but being on them will keep them from getting pneumonia or other infections until the rest clears up, which is really important. So that's a big relief.

And right now I'm writing this and watching The Zombie Diaries, which will then be followed by The Zombie Diaries 2 and finally The Howling Reborn, because I can't think of a better way to spend the rest of my Halloween night than chilling with zombie and werewolf movies. =D

EDIT: And Z's battery is magically holding a charge again. It hasn't done that in months. .__.;;

Keeping Busy [30 Oct 2011|01:08am]
[ mood | artistic ]

Baked cupcakes tonight. Starting at 11:30pm. JUST BECAUSE I WANTED TO. XD;;

Anyway, they're confetti cupcakes with white icing and I decorated them with Halloween decorations; orange and black sprinkes, tiny black and white candy skulls and slightly larger candy bones. The bones are white with splotches of red "blood".

idk I just felt like it, even though I can't eat many cupcakes anymore. *shrug* Like with most things I bake nowadays, probably 3/4 of them will go to Mom, Lee and my bro. I'd share with other people, too, but I pretty much don't know anyone else in Orillia anymore. It's a sad state of affairs, really. ~_~;;

Other than baking, I guess the news is Squall and the cats.

My spiffy laptop, Squall, is being a dick again. He won't load windows at all, and the startup diagnostics have literally been running for over 48 hours now. =__=;; In the morning if nothing's changed I'm going to just turn him off. Hopefully MDG will get back to me about having him repaired, since he's still under warranty until the end of November.

So for now I'm back to using my netbook, Z, which means I'm not going through Internet Withdrawl. No, instead I'm going through EVERYTHING ELSE withdrawl, since all my writing. music and bookmarks are on Squall. There is literally nothing on Z's HD since I cleared it out about 8 months ago. -.-;;

I'll have to hook Gale (my external drive) up and transfer some stuff from there, I guess.

In the meantime I've been mainlining two things the last few days; Mantracker and Tokyo Mew Mew. Yes, I am aware that this is about the weirdest combination I could have chosen. XD; Whatever, I'm enjoying them both so :P. I'm watching all the eps of Mantracker that I haven't seen, which is like 3/4 of them, and I'm working my way through TMM since for some reason, even though I have the whole series, I never watched past about episode 20. Must've got sidetracked and forgotten...

As for the cats, Nio has passed his cold on to EVERYONE EXCEPT NEKO AND LILY. *EPIC HEADDESK [HERE]*

Oh, and the other big news is that one of my close friends from highschool had her first baby! She's shared pics of the new little girl, and she's sooooo cute! CONGRATS, P! ♥♥♥♥♥

...this is the closest thing to a baking icon that I have. WHYYYYY?

Covering Vesta And Lilith [27 Oct 2011|10:18pm]
[ mood | artistic ]

So the last few years, since I started making jam/jelly/sauces/preserves/whatever, each fall around this time Mom takes some sample jars in to her work and takes orders from the people in her department. The last couple of years went okay, but THIS YEAR?

The last two days I've made $200 worth of sales. X3!!

I'm doing things a little differently this year, though. Mom took in the sample jars as usual, but then I put together a list of products that are available, rather than kinds that I happen to have on hand atm. Before, people paid and basically got their jam a day or two later, since it was coming out of current stock. This time they make their orders and pay, and their orders are delivered two weeks later.

All this means is that they can order things that I don't currently have stock of, or even make special requests for flavours/bulk orders/etc. And it's worked out very well, so I think I'm going to do it like this from now on. ♥

$200 (35 jars) isn't a TON, but it will completely cover having Ves and Lily spayed and Nio neutered (assuming his missing testicle makes an appearance, if not then I have to have him done via my regular vet. :P) Then I just have to put out the money for their shots, which is about $90 assuming all three of them get in; $30/cat. (If Nio has to be neutered later, then the jam money will cover Ves and Lily's spays AND their shots, yay!)

Anyhoo, I've got some jam to make over the next couple weeks!

Crab Apple Jelly
Lime-Zucchini Marmalade
Mixed Berry Jam
Pumpkin Sauce
Peach-Cranberry Jam
Apple Butter
Cranberry & Mixed Fruit Sauce (with Walnuts)

Aaaaaand I'm making a test batch of Pineapple-Plum Marmalade to see how it turns out. :3

One of the comments I often get from people who order from me is that I make very unique flavours. This is true of some of my stuff, like the Lime-Zucchini, Peach-Cranberry, Lychee or Pineapple-Plum, but I also do classic things like the Crab Apple, Apple Butter or Cranberry Sauce. I guess I just like to try new mixes, and having some different kind of products is working out very well for me. :)

Oh, and I'm also going to make a foray into the world of pickles and preserves this time; I have beets to make pickles out of (a special request from my Dad and Lois), and I want to try to make Crab Apple preserves, similar to something my Grandma on Dad's side apparently made when Dad was a kid. We'll see how it goes~

Which reminds me, I need to go back down and pick more of the tiny crab apples before they all go bad on the tree. Maybe tomorrow or the next day, if it's not pouring rain...

Under The Weather [26 Oct 2011|08:48pm]
[ mood | worried ]

Last week, I was supposed to have Nio neutered. I had it scheduled through the SPCA in Barrie and had paid for it and everything, and Mom and I dropped him off for 8am on the Monday, then headed off. We were supposed to pick him up at 5pm. No problem, we had running around and chores to keep us busy until then.

Except like an hour and a half later the SPCA called to tell me that Nio's neuter was a no-go because when they brought him into the operating room and gave him the cursory pre-surgery exam, it turned out that only one of his testicles was descended. They couldn't even feel the other one. And the SPCA is a high-volume spay/neuter clinic, so they don't have the resources to do the exploratory surgery to, yanno, locate Nio's MIA testicle. *FACEPALM*

So we picked him up, got the money refunded, and I brought him home. Ugh. We can try again in a month or so, but no guarantees. I might have to take him to my regular vet to be neutered (since they do have the resources/time), in which case it'll cost me like $300 instead of the $60 the SPCA charges. ~_~; Damn you and your balls, Nio, DAMN THEM.

In any case, a couple of days after that Nio started acting sick. Not super suck, but just like he's not feeling 100%. He hasn't been eating all of his food, and he's been relatively cuddly, which, for him, is very strange. He's also been sneezing a little. I think he picked up a bit of a bug while he was out and about, but it doesn't seem like anything to worry about...

...except that as of yesterday, Neko is off his food, too. Today was even shopping day; every week on Wednesday when I do groceries, the cats have Treat Night and get canned food instead of their usual kibble, and they go NUTS for it. Tonight everyone got super excited as usual-- but Neko didn't even come into the kitchen.

When I was done dishing the food out and everyone else was eating I went to find him, and he was just laying in his kitty bed behind the rocking chair in the living room. I picked him up and took him to the kitchen, and he kind of sniffed at the food, then just turned and walked away again. =/

This has me moderately worried about him, as Neko never turns down food, but ESPECIALLY canned food. He's a soft food FIEND.

I dunno. I guess I'll just keep an eye on him, the same as I am with Nio, and hope neither of them get worse. It'd cost me a fortune to take both of them to the vet over what appears to be a minor cold/flu type bug...

Out Of My Chest [25 Oct 2011|10:18pm]
[ mood | lethargic ]

Two entries in a row! Go me! =D;;

Mom came over today to help me move some things around in my place. I moved way back in the beginning of June, but idk I guess I have so much stuff that I'm still getting the last bits and pieces organized. It's the same story every time I move. Takes me forever to get settled completely.

Anyway, we got some stuff off to Goodwill and moved things around, then just sat around and chatted for a little while before heading out to Walmart. I needed some decongestant nasal spray and Mom needed some multivitamins, so we got those.

I also poked around for possible workout clothes, and was lucky enough that right now Walmart has all of their summer clothes on massive clearance, so I got a pair of shorts and two tank tops for a grand total of like $15. I still need to get to the YMCA and talk to someone about membership costs, but one step at a time, right?

Hm.

The last few days I've been feeling very lethargic, mostly because I'm desperately fighting off a sinus cold/infection that's trying like hell to migrate into my lungs. So far keeping myself heavily medicated has worked, so I'm keeping that strategy in play for now.

Anyway, so I've just basically spent a lot of time laying around doing nothing and feeling moderately miserable. And so I've been watching TV shows on my laptop. The last couple days have been episodes of Mantracker, as well as a little House and a couple eps of MLP: Friendship Is Magic.

The latest episode of MLP was good, btw. New Princess Luna episode! It made me giggle. But they changed her design some, so now I don't think the wig I got for Luna cosplay next year will work. Mrr. =/ That's annoying, but there's not much I can do about it, sooo... *shrug*

Once Again... [25 Oct 2011|02:28am]
[ mood | calm ]

I keep saying I'm going to write in this thing regularly like I used to, and then I never do. I'm not really sure why; health problems lately, depression and anxiety, financial issues? I guess I've just been distracted by other things, my mind isn't on doing random journal entries, which is stupid because writing in my LJ always helps me work through things that are happening in my life. =/

In any case, I have been updating my writing blog ([info]vanimadin); I set it up a while back and have been using it quite a bit. I can't remember if I ever mentioned it here before.

I've also FINALLY been updating the Esprit Studios blog ([info]espritstudios) after like a year of nothing. >>; This is (hopefully) a precursor to me finally getting the ES etsy shop up and running full capacity. It's a long process, though, as I have to photograph and catalog all of the items and then take the time to post them in the LJ and list them in the shop.

I've also been slowly but steadily working toward actually getting somewhere with House Of Yum. Working on a plan toward an actual, credible business is very hard and complicated, but I'm hoping it will all be worthwhile in the end. Fingers crossed, right?

Other than that, I've finally decided that I'm going to bite the bullet and pay for a gym membership. I've pretty much come as far as I can with my fitness on my own, and I need access to the facilities a gym would offer. I'm thinking probably the YMCA, both because it has disability discounts and because it offers use of the pool and various sporting areas as well as the typical weights that other gyms offer.

This of course means that I have to somehow AFFORD a membership as well as actual workout clothes. At least I already have decent runners? So I need to go out to Sport Check or wherever and do some pricing, too. Oh, and I need to check and see if I have a bathing suit that fits. .__.; Almost forgot about that.

Oh, and since I haven't updated recently I guess I never posted about Lily, Ven or Opal. :D

Lily: Another kitten. Dad brought her up from the farm, where her mother had abandoned her when she was about 2 weeks old. They found her by the middle barn and Lois bottle fed her for about a month before they passed her to me. She's a tiny little tabby, and when she arrived she looked like she was still 2 weeks old, even though she was actually 6 weeks. She was, and still is, EXTREMELY stunted with her growth and development because she was booted from her mama at such a young age. She's a handful. But being here with the other cats, lots of attention and as much food as she can possibly cram into her little kitty belly, she is catching up in leaps and bounds. Lils will never be the biggest cat. She'll always be small and delicate. But she's healthy and happy and robust now, so it's all good. ♥

Ven: My new rat, named after Ventus from KH: BBS. I unfortunately had to put down my last rat (Roxy, named after Roxas from KH) just a couple of days before I left for the US back in the summer. I was very sad about that, Roxy was a special little rattie and I loved her to bits. And I've had rats pretty much always since 2005 when I got my first one (Yuki). I really love the little guys, they're so smart and loving and adorable. They make great pets. So when I got back here from the US, I went and picked out a new little rat. He's white with a blonde-cream hood, and he lives up to his name by being a total trusting derp. He's a darling and I luff him. :3

Opal: Third snake's the charm! I've still got Aya, of course, and he's doing perfectly fine, but one day I went into J&K and was looking around and ZOMG! they had the most gorgeous snake I had ever seen. Opal is an albino reverse-stripe kingsnake. (You can find albino kingsnake pics here. Some of them are reverse-stripe and some aren't. I should really just upload some pics of Opal. :P) She's still quite young so she's only about two feet long. She'll probably end up around six feet, but kingsnakes are like garters, they get looooong but stay relatively skinny. Right now she's in the small terrarium (the one Aya started out in and Nyoka was in until she escaped and subsequently, yanno, DIED. *facepalm*) but eventually I'll have to upgrade her to one similar in size to what Aya is currently living in. Ah, her full name is "Opalescence", but w/e I just call her Opal. :P

Still want to try another sand boa, and I plan on getting a tarantula at some point. I'm finding keeping non-mammals very interesting. The snakes/turtle/fish/etc, are all very different from the cats and rabbits. Fascinating, really. ♥

Oh, also? MLP: Friendship Is Magic. I've been sucked in. SO RANDOM AND ADDICTING. [/is cosplaying Princess Luna at Otakon next year.]

What's your favorite vegetarian meal?

Vegetarian lasagna, by far. ♥ And I make really good ricotta-and-spinach Canelloni as well, which is similar to the lasagna (but with fewer ingredients.)

Then again, technically those both have eggs and cheese in them. So I guess it depends on what degree of vegetarianism you're talking about. Haha.

Just got an email from Mom. Or, rather, I just looked at an email from Mom. She sent it a couple hours ago, but I was out at the mall with Maddie and Chloe so I didn't get it until we got home a few minutes ago.

Uncle Lawrence died. It was his 80th birthday and he had a heart attack.

I guess Grandma was down in Arkansaw visiting Uncle Bob and Aunt Jean (Jean has cancer and has only a few months to go) and then on the way back she stopped to visit Uncle Lawrence for his birthday, and then this happened. She's still in Niagara now, helping to plan the funeral and everything...

Mom says she's likely to go down to Niagara for the funeral on Tuesday. I wish I could go, but it's just not possible. I hope everything goes well.

I'm very worried about Grandma, though; she lost one of her sisters just a couple years back, then Grandpa died of cancer, and now her other sister is dying of cancer as well, and her brother just passed away. That's probably why Mom is so adamant she'll be there for the funeral. Grandma probably couldn't handle this by herself...

That's it for now.

I'm working on a full Otakon-and-etc. update and hopefully it'll be posted soonish.

Been on the bus for 12 hours, which is much better than 26 the first year I came down to the States. I slept most of the trip this time anyway, since I didn't sleep the night before. Had too much to do; in the afternoon I took the town bus to Mom's place to do laundry, and when Mom got off work she had a coffee and then we went to my apartment to start organizing and moving the animals. Somehow, though spacial magic I only partially understand, we managed to fit everything in only two trips with Mom's little car. We were channeling Houdini or something, idk. So we settled the rabbits and cats at their temporary home in Mom's basement and then had dinner, after which we went back out so I could pick up rabbit/cat litter and a couple other misc. odds-and-sods that I needed to before I left. After that we went back so I could finish my laundry and then Mom took me home.

With the cats out from underfoot, I took the opportunity to clean and vacuum the house. YAY CLEAN FLOORS AND STUFF. I also did some baking; Broken Glass Torte for Dad (does that count as baking? XD;) and fruit loaf as well. It started off as banana bread to use up the bananas before I left, then I ended up adding pineapple, then cherries, then coconut. Then I realized I didn't have any flour. *facepalm* So I had to improvise and used my Magic Bullet to make corn and oat flour instead. It worked fine, just took less time to bake through and didn't rise as much as if I'd used white flour. So whatever. I made four loaves, so I took one to Mom and brought one with me for Dad and Lois as well. Baking done, I did the dishes, then continued cleaning. Then at like 3am I finally started packing for my trip. xD; Way to procrastinate, right? I know, I know.

Anyway, packing took FOREVER as usual, especially since it took me an entire hour to decide which beads I was going to bring with me. >>; Last year I managed to limit myself to like four boxes, plus a box of charms/pendants and a box of findings. Um. Yeah. This year? Like twelve boxes of beads, plus a big box of charms, a big box of pendants, and three boxes of findings. I fail, what can I say? I also had to pack Maddie and Chloe's Christmas and Birthday presents that I never got around to mailing. Because I also fail at THAT, too. So like half of my luggage this time is made up of stuff that I brought down for them. Then there's my cosplay stuff as well. I actually pack very light for ME, it's just that I can't go anywhere without bringing copious amounts of STUFF for other people and projects. ^_^;

So, having not slept a wink all night, Dad picked me and my luggage up atound 9am. We went out to the res for him to get smokes, then back into town so I could stop at Mom's and drop of my keys (so that she can get into my apartment to feed Genbu and Aya and the fish) and her vacuum (which I had borrowed the night before.) She and Lee were up, so I said a quick goodbye to them and then we were on our way. The trip from Orillia to Georgetown was mostly uneventful. Except for the massive detour because of an earlier car accident on the highway, our brakes almost going out because of sitting on them so much in stop-and-go-traffic, and a short stop at Toys R' Us in Mississagua. TOYS. YAY. Dad found something for his Star Wars collection, and I got come LPS for my own, as well as some animal erasers because SO CUTE OMG SQUEE. I also wanted a Transformers Ravage figure, but I managed to resist. Mostly by reminding myself that anything I bought there I would have to haul down to the US and back again lol.

Oh, note to self: 12th line outside of Orillia? FUCKING FULL TO BURSTING WITH CRAB APPLES. GET MOM TO TAKE YOU OUT THERE IN SEPTEMBER.

At the kennel, there was a little Lang family get together for one of Lois' granddaughters' birthday. It was slightly awkward for me to be there, but they were all nice to me. I did get some weird looks from the kids, though, since they had never met me before. Plus my hair cut is totally like a dude's now. But in general it was fine. After they left I got to talk with Lois some, which I always enjoy. But around 7 I HAD to lie down for a nap. I just hit the wall and couldn't keep going. My body was suddenly like "I QUIT". So I crashed on the living room couch for two hours. Then at 9pm I got back up so we could get underway.

Dad and Lois have accuired some dogs who aren't poms in the last year. First was Maggie, a pug/boxer cross that Lois' mother bought and then decided she didn't want, so Lois offered to take her. Then there was Lucy, a little Jack Russell who is really thin and lankey compared to most Jacks. Then a couple months ago they got another Jack, Sadie, who was half-starved and hadn't had any real affection or anything in her entire life. The pics from the day they first picked her up are just sad; she was so thin her ribs and spine stuck out. Poor thing. But she's all chubby and happy now, so it's all good. While Lucy has attached herself to Lois, Sadie has adopted Dad. And Dad is absolutely head-over-heels in love with her. But to be fair, Sadie is the suckiest, most friendly, affectionate little dog you could ever imagine. <3

Anyway, since the market for poms isn't great right now and the market for Jacks is still decent, they decided to give a litter of Jacks a try, so they went out and found a male, Max, who is the newest addition to the pack. Sort of. Because he's unaltered he has to stay in the kitchen and can't run with the girls or EVERYONE would be pregnant, including every human leg who happened too close. lol. Max is a sweetheart, but a little excitable. In more than one way. Haha. They plan to try breeding him to Maggie next year for some cross pups, and then Lucy the year after that. Sadie won't be old enough to breed safely for a couple of years yet, but she's the one that they're really looking forward to getting puppies from since her personality is so perfect. I guess we'll see!

Right now they have one litter of tiny itty bitty pom puppies that are RIGHT AT THE EPITOME OF CUTENESS. Two blacks, a cream (with siamese-like points and some white markings) and an orange-sable. (Their mother is black; idk about their father. It was this pairing that spawned the Parti Poms earlier this year.) They're maybe two weeks old, can see and hear and toddle around a little, but are generally just chubby round little poofy things that lay around with tubby milk!bellies and kind of resemble miniscule bear cubs. SO FREAKING ADORABLE. And they're all friendly as hell, and their mom has no trouble letting you reach in to pet them. Which is good because I spent a good amount of time smishing me some little pups and cooing at them and letting them suck on my nose and chin. X3 Dad says he'll take some pics so I can share. You guys. Seriously. You can't even comprehend the level of OMGCUTE!!1! these dogs are without seeing them. I WILL SHARE, AND YOU WILL SQUEE YOURSELVES TO DEATH I SWEAR.

If they weren't way too young to be sepparated from their mom, I would have been seriously tempted to try smuggling one of them out in my pocket. Heh.

Anyhow, around 9pm Dad and I took off and drove into Toronto so I could catch my bus. We even only got a tiny bit lost! And when we got to the terminal Dad hung around with me until it was time for my bus to board, then he headed home. He did call a few minutes later, though, just to make sure I was on board and on my way fine. Then the 12 hour ride commenced, but to be honest I only remember about 1/4 of it because it was dark and the bus was moving and I just fell asleep.

Ugh, US customs was a pain in the ass this year. And yet at the same time, managed to be really polite and friendly about it. It was weird.

First, the guy almost didn't let me into "his country" because of my passport photo. That one I had anticipated being a problem, since my passport photo was taken back when I was 260+ pounds. I've lost over a hundred pounds AND cut all my hair off since I had it taken, so it doesn't really look like me anymore. But eventually he decided the photo was workable, he just highly reccommended that I get a new one before next summer. Then he balked because I only have $300 US cash on me. WELL WHAT? I have more money, just not IN CASH ON MY PERSON. JEEZ. He was like "how are you going to support yourself while you're down there? $300 won't even feed one person for a whole month!" but I explained about the money situation and staying with friends and etc etc etc and he finally gave in... only to ask if I "had something to be nervous about". Because my hands were shaking. *FACEPALM*

I told him it was because of blood sugar, because that was esier than explaining that I SHAKE LIKE A CHIHUAHUA ON SPEED. ALL THE TIME. FOR NO REASON. So, that sorted... he wanted to know if I had any reason to return to Canada. I was like "...bwuh?" But apparently, because I'm not working, he was concerned I was going to just, yanno, STAY in the US and not go back to Canadaland. Forever. So what proof did I have that I would be going home after the trip? We finally decided that my family and pets were relatively decent reasons. At which point he demanded to know about Maddie and Chloe's home and job statuses, and expressed concerns for me being able to support myself (AGAIN) since neither of them has a full-time job. ASDGH. I was starting to get frustrated by then. I mean really, really frustrated.

I just smiled anyway.

But I finally did get out of there and on to baggage check, which is always interesting because of the weird shit I bring with me for cosplay and stuff. At least the baggage checkers usually get a laugh or two out of it. They take their jobs seriously, but not nearly as seriously as the guys asking the initial questions. =/ In any case, the guy checking my bags only had a problem with my snacks. He took my apple, my cherries, and my cherry tomatoes. Boooooo. But oh well. They're easily replaceable. And he didn't even make a mess of my bags like most customs guys do. I didn't have to reorganize anything at all! (...until later when my backpack kicked the bucket. Then I had to transfer my lunch stuff into another bag and just chucked the backpack in the trash. It was a dollar store one anyway, so meh.)

So, that done, back on the bus and on with the trip! ...so basically, more sleeping. lmao.

At Detroit, though, I had a stopover for an hour until my next bus came in. I got to talking to one of the girls that had been on the last bus and was going to be on the next one. Tyra was super nice and we got along great. So we chatted for the rest of the stopover and then on the bus some before both of us decided we needed to sleep some more. She got off two stops before I got off in Dayton, but we exchanged info so we can get ahold of each other later. ^^ That was once thing about the first year I came down here; I met that girl, Z, on the bus, and we got along great, but I forgot to get her email. I still kind of regret that. =/

But, all in all, it was a pretty good trip. I got in here at Dayton around 1pm and have been waiting for Maddie and Chloe while I've been writing this entry. Maddie had a test to do or whatever so they couldn't be here to meet me when I got in. But that's fine. I have Squall with me, so I've kept busy, and they're on their way now. Should be here any minute! ...and Squall is yelling at me that his battery is low. And I have to go to the bathroom. So I guess I'm done this journal. XD;;

Damn You "Free To Good Home" Signs! [15 Jun 2011|10:03pm]
[ mood | calm ]

Also? Damn you lack of willpower. And having the space now. And having lost Tri back in the winter.

...yeaaah, I should NOT be allowed near Free Kitten signs in any context. >>;

But I guess... well, I had a free space again since Tri is gone, plus I have a ton of room here, and on top of that now I know I can get them spayed/neutered and get them their shots really cheap through the Barrie SPCA. If I had to try to afford all that at the regular vet it would be upwards of $1000 by the time I was done, and I wouldn't have brought them home.

Anyway, the one in the foreground is Vesta; named after the Roman Goddess of the Hearth and Harvest. Ves is a girl and her colour is brindle (she has one cream glove on her front left paw, which is adorable. ♥) She has kind of brown-green eyes right now, but I think they're probably going to end up totally green by the time they're done changing colour. Ves is really spunky and seems to love to climb on things. And by "things" I mean "me". She climbs up clothing and then clings to the back of my neck or my head, which is really cute and funny NOW, but I imagine I should break her of that habit before she gets too much bigger. ^^;

The mostly behind Ves is Nio; named after the Gods in Japanese myth who traveled with Buddah to protect him. (Technically, the o should have a - over it, but I can't figure out how to do that on my keyboard. =/) Nio is a boy and almost completely black with about a dozen white hairs on his little belly. His eyes are kind of hazel right now. I think they might end up brown or goldish. He's quite rambunctious as well, but not nearly as much as Vesta. He's a lot more laid back. She pushes him around quite a bit, actually, even though she's smaller. XD;;

They're sister and brother from the same litter, and I just picked them up today. They've settled in quite nicely, though for now they're confined to the bedroom. I've given them their worming meds today, and I was giving all the cats their spring flea treatment today anyway, so they got treated for that as well (I had extra kitten Advantage since Tia is so small she still has to use that instead of the Advantage for adult cats. lol.) Now they're chilling in here, and in a few days I'll let them out to start exploring the rest of the house and terrorizing the other cats. ♥

They are IMPOSSIBLE to get pics of right now, hence the somewhat dubious one here. They don't stay still long enough for me to snap a photo unless they're asleep, and they've taken to sleeping on the spare blankets under the bed. (Not that I blame them, it's really cozy under there, really.) I managed to get this little pic when they were snoozing under the dresser instead, before they discovered they could get under the bed.

Right.

On a somewhat-related note, I'm finally burying Tri this weekend. I asked Grandma a while back if I could bury him somewhere on her property and she said yes, but until now we haven't been able to because of snow/frost and then rain. This weekend is supposed to be nice, so Mom and my brother and I are going to go up and take care of it.

That's not going to be a good day for me, I already know that. But coming home and cuddling kittens will probably help me feel a little better. And their antics are pretty cute and distracting.

Anyhow, a real update soon, I promise. Also, pics of the new place since it's about 75% organized now. Yep.

EDIT: The image is kind of big... if it messes up anyone's friends page let me know and I'll make it smaller or put it under a cut or something.
